We are grieved to report the passing at age 90 of a former, long-time volunteer in our council's Emergency Services office. Gerald "Jerry" Rothenfluch spent his life in service to others. Just one of his stints was nearly a dozen years with the Emergency Services office of St. Vincent de Paul of Portland. There, he helped a wide range of people in need to get caught up on rent and utility bills. Jerry liked to work with people in person to figure out ways to solve their crise

Your gift can help feed a hungry family

A torrent of orders has forced the early closure of our 2025 Thanksgiving food box line. This year we set a new record, meeting the maximum number of requests we could handle in less than three days' time. After opening Oct. 28, our small cadre of call takers took more than 360 orders in less than 16 hours. The call takers' rate of orders taken, on a daily basis, was 123 per day. The prior record was 80.2 per day, set in 2024. The record before that was 64.7 per day in 2019.
