News of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) is now ubiquitous. Current reports state, sadly, that eight people have died in Oregon as a result of the virus. By all accounts, this will get much worse before it gets better. As people, both symptomatic and non-symptomatic, are now directed to self-quarantine, numerous businesses have either reduced services or shuttered completely. The result is thousands of fellow Oregonians have been laid off from their jobs, with no timetable set for their return.  Faced with the loss of a steady paycheck, many will find themselves doing the unthinkable- reaching out for help from complete strangers.

St. Vincent de Paul, whose mission it is to provide rent, utility, food, transportation and other assistance, to help those in need, will be called upon more than ever to ensure that individuals affected by this pandemic will be able to pay their rent and utility bills and have access to emergency food supplies. Although emergency legislation is working its way through Congress for some paid sick leave, it is very narrow in scope and will most certainly not be sufficient for the needs of all Oregonians.

It is a mandate that we take care of each other in times of crisis. Your donation will help us administer aid to those families and individuals who face short term uncertainty regarding temporary loss of household income. There is much we can’t control about this global pandemic. However, we can control whether or not our friends and neighbors fall through what is currently a very porous social safety net. Now, more than ever, I ask you to reach into your hearts and respond generously in this time of historic need.

Your generous donation can reach us at our web site link https://www.svdppdx.org/a150/donate/
