JOIN THE POUND FOR POUND CHALLENGE

Pound For Pound Challenge to inspire Oregon residents to Eat Healthy—Be Active

PORTLAND, Ore. (January 6, 2010) – Join the Pound for Pound Challenge and help fight hunger in Oregon.

NBC’s The Biggest Loser, General Mills, Subway, 24 Hour Fitness and Feeding America are partnering on the Pound For Pound Challenge, a program that encourages residents in Oregon and Americans across the country to lose weight nationally to help provide hunger relief locally

To join the Challenge, visit www.PFPChallenge.com or www.BiggestLoser.com and enter your weight loss goals. For every pound of weight participants pledge to lose, the Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 14 cents to Feeding America – enough to deliver one pound of groceries to a local food bank – up to a maximum donation of $800,000.

Each person who pledges can be matched with a local Feeding America food bank nearest their residence, and donations will be delivered to those food banks when the Challenge ends.  St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Network , which includes our Food Bank, Mobile Kitchen, Food for Kids program and  our Emergency Services food box program, is a Feeding America partner.

“For St. Vincent de Paul Food Recover Network, the Pound for Pound Challenge creates opportunities  to make healthy choices about what we eat and our level of physical activity.  We are sensitive to the fact that many low-income households across NW Oregon do not always have access to healthy, nutritious foods,” said Sharon Hills, Executive Director. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult for us to meet the needs of our members and Conferences, especially when new clients arrive all the time. This is especially sobering when you consider that our network provided record-breaking amounts of assistance this past year. Our Food Bank has added two new programs to meet the needs of underserved rural areas. Our Mobile Kitchen has served 9,445 meals; Food for Kids 3,650 food packages; distributed 9,785 senior suppliemental food boxes; Food Bank distruted 1,872,747 pounds of food; emergency assistance for rent and utilities is over $1,140.556, providing well over 300,000 services last year.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that the rate of hunger in Oregon and the United States rose significantly last year. Oregon, ranks second in the nation in the percentage of people experiencing hunger. In total, more than 49 million Americans struggled to get enough to eat at some point in 2008, the highest total in 14 years.

In addition to pledging to lose weight, at www.PFPChallenge.comyou can create a PFP Challenge team on Facebook, invite a friend to join the Challenge via e-mail and learn how you can volunteer at local food banks. To learn more and to join the Challenge, visit www.PFPChallenge.com.

The program is built around the success of The Biggest Loser, a reality show that challenges and encourages overweight contestants to shed pounds through diet and exercise.

Snickers® Brand And David Arquette Make a Big Move to Help St. Vincent De Paul Food Recovery Network Bar Hunger

Mars Snackfood US announced Monday , July 15th that its SNICKERS® Brand is teaming up with Feeding America and St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Network to ‘Bar Hunger’ – a campaign to help the one in eight Americans struggling with hunger. As part of ‘Bar Hunger,’ SNICKERS will donate the equivalent of at least three million meals to Feeding America in 2009, some of which will reach St. Vincent de Paul Portland Food Recovery Network. The brand will also educate and inspire Americans to help through special branding and educational verbiage on its SNICKERS packaging, dedicated national advertising, www.facebook.com/snickers, as well as series of events throughout the year.

SNICKERS enlisted the support of actor and Feeding America Entertainment Council Chairman David Arquette, who lived on the famed Madison Square Garden Marquee, July 14 and 15. At a time when the need for food is up 30 percent, Arquette hopes to raise $250,000 in donations for Feeding America, through Facebook, text messaging and on-site collections.

“The SNICKERS brand has always satisfied hunger,” said Carole Walker, vice president, integrated marketing communications for Mars Snackfood US. “The ‘Bar Hunger’ campaign is designed to draw attention to a very real challenge facing America. But this charitable effort is about more than putting a logo on our wrapper. We want people to join the effort and help in any way they can.”

SNICKERS has teamed with Arquette because of his passionate participation in the fight against hunger. Aside from his role as the first-ever chairman of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council, he also regularly volunteers at a food bank in Venice, Calif.

“I’ve seen first hand the impact of hunger, which is why campaigns like ‘Bar Hunger’ are so critical,” said David Arquette. “But SNICKERS and I can’t do it alone. We need to educate all Americans about this issue and mobilize them to do something. The only way we can truly ‘Bar Hunger’ is together.”

Make a “Chomptribution”
In addition to the donation that SNICKERS will make to Feeding America, the brand also worked with the non-profit to provide opportunities for other Americans to support the cause, including:

  • SNICKERS will match every donation — up to a total of $25,000 — made to Feeding America via the SNICKERS Facebook page, www.facebook.com/snickers, beginning July 14;
  • People can make a $5.00 donation to Feeding America by texting the word “BAR” to 90999** from July 14 through December 31, 2009

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide Catholic organization of layperson’s, open to all who wish to live their faith by loving and serving their neighbor. St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Networkis on the front lines serving the homeless and economically disadvantaged in Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Multnomah, and Washington counties.

“We’re very thankful for the support of SNICKERS and David Arquette,” said Sharon Hills, Executive Director, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council. “Hunger is a very real issue, especially in Portland, which is why it’s critical for us to continue to educate local residents about hunger and encourage them to do their part to help, either by making monetary donations or volunteering.”
