Mobile Kitchen Shines in the Starlight Parade

Mobile Kitchen Volunteers ready to go!

The 2010 Portland General Electric/SOLV Starlight Parade rolled through the streets of Downtown Portland on Saturday night, June 4th and among the entries this year was the St. Vincent de Paul Mobile Kitchen. Proudly wearing the #43 plagued in the parade procession, the Mobile Kitchen was aglow with thousands of sparkling lights and bright smiling faces. The Starlight parade isn’t the usual show with traditional marching bands and fancy floats – instead, the hand-built entries glow in the dark and light up Portland streets lined with fans.  This year, staff and volunteers from the St. Vincent de Paul Portland Council worked together to build their float.

The dazzlingly Mobile Kitchen pulled a lit up and fully decorated flatbed trailer equipped with a kitchen table which seated float riders. The Mobile Kitchen and float was filled to the brim with excited and energetic Portland Council Conference members, staff, volunteers, community partners from Canby Cares and friends and families.

This year over 250,000 spectators came to see the parade of sparkling floats, gleaming bands and glowing marching groups wind their way through downtown Portland.

St Vincent de Paul offers summer lunches in Sandy

Because no child should be hungry

Beacuse no child should be hungry during summertime

Hunger is a reality for many Oregonians even in our own backyard. In, Oregon, 1 in 5 Oregonians are using Food Stamps and can only stretch them so far and depend on the free school lunch program during the school year for their children. As the summer months approach, parents and children are depending on summer food programs to provide, in some cases, at least one nutritious meal per day during the week.

St. Vincent de Paul became aware that NO children’s summer lunch program would be available in the Sandy, OR area this summer. We received this information to late to apply for a funding reimbursement program.  Realizing the need in Sandy we could not just ignore this dilemma that would have occured without our assistance. We deliver 200 Food For Kids supplemental food bags to Sandy children each week when school is in session, therefore we know the need for a summer food program is essential.SVDP Provides Summer Food Program to Children

After some internal planning we contacted our partner from Sandy Community Action Center, Rita Ezard the Director, to present our plan.  St. Vincent de Paul would provide the food for lunches and Sandy Community Action Center volunteers could make and distribute them Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays from 11am – 12 noon. On Wednesdays our Mobile Kitchen serves a community meal from 12 noon- 2pm and the children would be able to enjoy a hot meal at noon once a week. Children are welcome on the Mobile Kitchen alone or with family and friends.

The St. Vincent de Paul food programs are stretched to the limit. We were not prepared for this increase in need however we feel very strongly that no one should go hungry, everyone has a right to enough food to provide continuing health for both body and mind, especially growing children. Our Children are our future and without good nutrition they will lose vital brain cells that will hinder their learning process. Nothing is sadder then knowing a child or family is going hungry and we did not help them.

JOIN THE POUND FOR POUND CHALLENGE

Pound For Pound Challenge to inspire Oregon residents to Eat Healthy—Be Active

PORTLAND, Ore. (January 6, 2010) – Join the Pound for Pound Challenge and help fight hunger in Oregon.

NBC’s The Biggest Loser, General Mills, Subway, 24 Hour Fitness and Feeding America are partnering on the Pound For Pound Challenge, a program that encourages residents in Oregon and Americans across the country to lose weight nationally to help provide hunger relief locally

To join the Challenge, visit www.PFPChallenge.com or www.BiggestLoser.com and enter your weight loss goals. For every pound of weight participants pledge to lose, the Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 14 cents to Feeding America – enough to deliver one pound of groceries to a local food bank – up to a maximum donation of $800,000.

Each person who pledges can be matched with a local Feeding America food bank nearest their residence, and donations will be delivered to those food banks when the Challenge ends.  St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Network , which includes our Food Bank, Mobile Kitchen, Food for Kids program and  our Emergency Services food box program, is a Feeding America partner.

“For St. Vincent de Paul Food Recover Network, the Pound for Pound Challenge creates opportunities  to make healthy choices about what we eat and our level of physical activity.  We are sensitive to the fact that many low-income households across NW Oregon do not always have access to healthy, nutritious foods,” said Sharon Hills, Executive Director. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult for us to meet the needs of our members and Conferences, especially when new clients arrive all the time. This is especially sobering when you consider that our network provided record-breaking amounts of assistance this past year. Our Food Bank has added two new programs to meet the needs of underserved rural areas. Our Mobile Kitchen has served 9,445 meals; Food for Kids 3,650 food packages; distributed 9,785 senior suppliemental food boxes; Food Bank distruted 1,872,747 pounds of food; emergency assistance for rent and utilities is over $1,140.556, providing well over 300,000 services last year.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that the rate of hunger in Oregon and the United States rose significantly last year. Oregon, ranks second in the nation in the percentage of people experiencing hunger. In total, more than 49 million Americans struggled to get enough to eat at some point in 2008, the highest total in 14 years.

In addition to pledging to lose weight, at www.PFPChallenge.comyou can create a PFP Challenge team on Facebook, invite a friend to join the Challenge via e-mail and learn how you can volunteer at local food banks. To learn more and to join the Challenge, visit www.PFPChallenge.com.

The program is built around the success of The Biggest Loser, a reality show that challenges and encourages overweight contestants to shed pounds through diet and exercise.
