Pound for Pound Challenge Ends

Thank you for Supporting the Food Recovery Network

For the second consecutive year, Feeding America partnered with General Mills, The Biggest Loser and other corporate partners encouraged Americans to lose weight through the Pound for Pound Challenge. Built around the incredible success of NBC’s The Biggest LoserThe program allowed anyone to shed pounds along with the contestants by pledging their weight-loss goals at pfpchallenge.com. For every pound pledged, General Mills and other partners will donate 14 cents to Feeding America. The sponsors contributed a total of up to $1.5 million.

We appreciate our partnership with Feeding America and the great partners they have formed with the following donors and their special fundraising programs; Macy’s Shop for a Cause and Macy’s Come Together, The Cheesecake Factory sales of slices of Stefanie’s Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake, Morton’s cook book tour, Pound for Pound Challenge 2009 funding from special marked lids and seals, and Ruby Tuesday’s Cookies for a Cause. Through our combined partnerships St. Vincent de Paul received $10,650 that will be used to feed hungry children, families and individuals in our community.

The Pound for Pound Challenge, which ran from December 8,2009 through June 30,2010 was featured throughout the spring season of NBC’s “Biggest Loser Couples”. Across the country, individuals pledged an incredible 6,203,347 pounds. We are looking forward to our next season, with more pounds pledged and people making better food choices.

Thanks to the show’s immense popularity, the Pound for Pound Challenge also helped raise significant awareness about the hunger issue in America.

Thank you for helping to make this year a success!

Mobile Kitchen Shines in the Starlight Parade

Mobile Kitchen Volunteers ready to go!

The 2010 Portland General Electric/SOLV Starlight Parade rolled through the streets of Downtown Portland on Saturday night, June 4th and among the entries this year was the St. Vincent de Paul Mobile Kitchen. Proudly wearing the #43 plagued in the parade procession, the Mobile Kitchen was aglow with thousands of sparkling lights and bright smiling faces. The Starlight parade isn’t the usual show with traditional marching bands and fancy floats – instead, the hand-built entries glow in the dark and light up Portland streets lined with fans.  This year, staff and volunteers from the St. Vincent de Paul Portland Council worked together to build their float.

The dazzlingly Mobile Kitchen pulled a lit up and fully decorated flatbed trailer equipped with a kitchen table which seated float riders. The Mobile Kitchen and float was filled to the brim with excited and energetic Portland Council Conference members, staff, volunteers, community partners from Canby Cares and friends and families.

This year over 250,000 spectators came to see the parade of sparkling floats, gleaming bands and glowing marching groups wind their way through downtown Portland.

St Vincent de Paul offers summer lunches in Sandy

Because no child should be hungry

Beacuse no child should be hungry during summertime

Hunger is a reality for many Oregonians even in our own backyard. In, Oregon, 1 in 5 Oregonians are using Food Stamps and can only stretch them so far and depend on the free school lunch program during the school year for their children. As the summer months approach, parents and children are depending on summer food programs to provide, in some cases, at least one nutritious meal per day during the week.

St. Vincent de Paul became aware that NO children’s summer lunch program would be available in the Sandy, OR area this summer. We received this information to late to apply for a funding reimbursement program.  Realizing the need in Sandy we could not just ignore this dilemma that would have occured without our assistance. We deliver 200 Food For Kids supplemental food bags to Sandy children each week when school is in session, therefore we know the need for a summer food program is essential.SVDP Provides Summer Food Program to Children

After some internal planning we contacted our partner from Sandy Community Action Center, Rita Ezard the Director, to present our plan.  St. Vincent de Paul would provide the food for lunches and Sandy Community Action Center volunteers could make and distribute them Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays from 11am – 12 noon. On Wednesdays our Mobile Kitchen serves a community meal from 12 noon- 2pm and the children would be able to enjoy a hot meal at noon once a week. Children are welcome on the Mobile Kitchen alone or with family and friends.

The St. Vincent de Paul food programs are stretched to the limit. We were not prepared for this increase in need however we feel very strongly that no one should go hungry, everyone has a right to enough food to provide continuing health for both body and mind, especially growing children. Our Children are our future and without good nutrition they will lose vital brain cells that will hinder their learning process. Nothing is sadder then knowing a child or family is going hungry and we did not help them.

End of the Year Wrap-Up

Over the past two months, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Portland Council and our food bank the Food Recovery Network busily prepared for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The first week in November began with the opening of the Thanksgiving Emergency Food Box request line in the Portland Council’s Emergency Services Department. Conference volunteers collected 300 names for the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at Resurrection Catholic Church’s Thanksgiving meal food boxes program.  By the second week of November, the Christmas Food Box lines open at the Portland Council offices in conjunction with Adopt-a-Family phone lines. Names were taken on the Christmas Food Box until December 15th. Each year, the Christmas phone lines are staffed by Conference volunteers who take the requests for assistance.

Central Catholic High School’s annual food drive resulted in 7,661 lbs being collected by students and staff. Approximately, twenty-four Central Catholic student volunteers and staff helped sort, weigh and box the donations. This year the students collected twice as much food as last year and donated a check in the amount of $200.

This year’s Scouting for Food drive brought in 10% more than last year’s drive.

Preparation for the December Christmas Food Box Distribution begins early, even though the distribution was on December 19th. Conference’s came to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank to pick up boxes, bread, butter, stuffing, chips, fresh pears, and hams to add to their Christmas food boxes on December 17 and 18th.  This year over 4,289 families were assisted by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, Conferences, Jesuit Alumni and students throughout a five county area.  Conference volunteers delivered the Christmas Food Boxes and (toys) to low income and working poor families. Christmas is always a collaborative effort with St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, Central Catholic High School and Boys Scouts of America collecting food and St. Vincent de Paul Conferences, Jesuit High School students and Jesuit Alumni delivering the filled boxes. St. Vincent de Paul Conference of Christ the King Catholic Church in Milwaukie, took on an additional 45 Christmas food boxes for military families where the spouse was deployed. This was the first year for Christmas dinners on the new St. Vincent de Paul Mobile Kitchen. We partnered with AFSCME childcare workers union who collected nearly 1000 gloves, socks, mittens and other winter apparel. Santa handed out stocking filled with goodies and gave children the opportunity to choose their own appeal after eating a Christmas meal on the mobile kitchen. We served 404 meals which included ham and all the trimmings at five sites in Sandy, Estacada, Molalla, Canby and a homeless site in Clackamas County.

Companies and families contacted St. Vincent Portland Council to Adopt-A-Family for Christmas was coordinated through the St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Network. This year 121 families, 512 total people which included 355 children were adopted and delivered a Christmas meal and gifts.
