Emergency Response to the Community

***IMMEDIATE NEED ***

DISASTER RESPONSE FOR VERNONIA, MIST, BIRKENFELD Disaster Response for Vernonia, Seaside, and Astoria

The St. Vincent de Paul Portland Council is responding to the emergency needs of people living into the Vernonia, Mist and Birkenfeld areas.

St. Vincent de Paul is collecting funds to help the victims who have experienced any form of destruction from recent wind or flood damage. $18,000 was distributed initially to our volunteer groups that offer assistance to people in need in these small communities.  In the past weeks we have collected an additional $8,745 which will be used to purchase beds, refrigeraters, stoves, washers and driers.

St. Vincent de Paul and Christ The King, Helping Hands program for a partnership. On December 14th a 24' truck, an 18' truck and a small trailer packed full of household goods was delivered to a storage area in the Mist/Birkenfeld community.

Success Stories from Mist / Birkenfeld

A large group of community citizens gathered together to decide where to begin the recovery process. The first family they contacted was an elderly retired couple who lived close to the river. Their rented home had several feet of water inside which completely destroyed all their belongings. The landlord gave the couple another place to live while their flooded home could be dried, cleaned and sanitized. The elderly woman had to leave to attend her sister's funeral. When she returns she will find everything she needs in her temporary home.  The people in the town set up the house with a sofa, chair, tables, lamps, bedding, tv, washer, dryer, refrigerator, stove and other household goods which had been delivered to the storage unit on Dec. 14th.

The next home is owned b a widow who has her father living with her. They live in a spot away from other homes on the night of the flood they forced to flee up a logging road near their house to higher ground. They spent the night in their car watching their home being immersed in water. The water was so high it even came in through the windows. The next day they were able to rescue all their animals, none perished. The town's people decided to save some of the stored furniture for her until her home could be dried out. They were able to set up a bed so she didn't need to sleep on the floor.

Funds to purchase needed items such beds, refigeraters, stoves, washers & dryers can be donated by clicking on Donate Now. Please indicate, in the note area, that your donation is for the "Emergency Relief Fund ".
