St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council is very grateful to the employees of Providence Health and Services in the Portland area who raised $12,226 during their annual Table of the Kings event in February. That amount was matched by the regional office of Providence who presented us with a donation of providence-hea-svcs-logo-2x$24,453. During this annual event all Providence dining areas serve a simple meal of soup and bread. The historical significance is with the founder of The Sisters of Providence, Emilie Gamelin who served a simple meal out of her brother’s house for those who were in need. She called it the Table of the King in recognition of the dignity of every person served.

Very good news! The new bus purchased last year through generous donations is now completely renovated and ready to start serving food. Our thanks again to all who helped with this project. The Mobile Kitchen will offer hot lunches every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at St. Aloysius in Estacada and every Wednesday at St. Michaels in Sandy, and every Thursday at the Canby Service Center.MK Exterior 2

In addition to its weekly schedule the Mobile Kitchen will once again partner with the Oregon Food Bank, Clackamas Service Center and GracePointe Church for a nine week Summer Food Program beginning June 13th. From Noon to 2:00 pm at One Towne Center Apartments we will serve families who are experiencing food insecurity during the summer months. Donations of fresh produce from Oregon Food Bank will be in each food basket and St. Vincent de Paul will provide hot nutritious lunches. Volunteers from GracePointe will help in all aspects of the operation. Last year over 3,000 children and families were served by the Summer Food Program. Expansion to a year-round program is now in discussion

Our faith guides us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition. Our mission directs us to provide assistance to anyone who asks for our help. The services our staff and volunteers provide help reduce hunger and prevent homelessness. We can only do what we do with your help. Easter reminds us that suffering still exists and that we are still called to feed and aid those in need. Spring is here and during these most holy of days let us continue to be of service to others, to draw upon the spiritual power that Easter gives us, and put our beliefs into action.

It’s not too early to start planning now. If you are going to be 70 1/2 or older in 2016 plan to make a tax-free gift from your IRA before December 31st.

An IRA Charitable Rollover is a direct transfer of up to $100,000 from your IRA to a qualified charity such as St. Vincent de Paul. Because the donation is made directly to St. Vincent de Paul, you will benefit because you will not have to count the donated amount as income for 2016 tax purposes. This is very helpful in excluding all or part of your required minimum distribution.

Contact your IRA administrator and instruct them to make the contribution from your IRA directly to St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council. Our tax ID is 93-0456525. Call 503-234-5287 with any questions.

Bless you for your continued support.

Receiving four out of a possible four stars tells donors that we adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and that we consistently executes our mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only 4% of the Charity Navigator charities have received at least 6 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Society of St Vincent de Paul, Portland Council outperforms most other charities in America.

St. Vincent de Paul receives top ranking in 2015 for sound fiscal management, transparency, and accountability.
